"Plants, Light & Art" by Dana Duellman

This column is designed to help all women (because we are all working…no?) define, create and live the Feng Shui Lifestyle.  What does THAT mean?  Feng Shui translates into wind and water.  The entire purpose of Feng Shui is to live in harmony with nature.  As we are, that encompasses the nature out-of-doors, our living space and our working space.  Let’s get started to see how you can attract the life you desire by being energized and balanced by the spaces you are living and working in…

In the last column we discussed how to set your space up to be open and flowing and addressed the three most important rooms in your house:  the master bedroom, the living room and the kitchen. Hopefully, you’ve made some progress and are feeling a positive energetic connection to your home.

The third step, after clearing clutter in your space, and setting your space up to be open and flowing is to bring in a few key enhancements to benefit you and your family.  There are three I am going to focus on: plants, light and art.

Plants are a huge asset to any space for many reasons.  The primary reason is that healthy plants are vibrant living energy, and when you have vibrant living energy in your space, it attracts MORE energy to it.  If you have an unhealthy plant you are not attracting Ch’i energy, so you must either move the plant and nurture it back to health or recycle it into the forest or earth.  If you really need to have plant energy in your space, but it is too dark and a plant light is not doable, then invest in silk plants and silk plant cleaner.  The second reason plants are so wonderful is that they clean the air.  As the interior air is much more toxic than the outside air, it is important to have these natural filters to remove toxins from the air and create healthy oxygen for you.

Light is another Ch’i attractor.  We have so many options available to us…table lamps, incandescent, floor lamps, petite lamps, hidden strand lights, overhead lights, candles…the list goes on and on.  If there is an area in your home that is a dark corner or nook, it is associated with an aspect of your life as to where it is in the Bagua of your home.  We want every aspect of our life (Career, Relationships, Creativity, Balance, etc) to be illuminated and not be in the dark.  As you walk through your home, do you notice areas that are shaded or dark?  This might be an excellent place to bring in some lighting…upwards floor lamps, a table and lamp or even just a candle.  Illumination will bring energy into the once darkened area, and energy is what is needed to create shifts!

The art that you have on your walls and in your home and office should be inspiring and meaningful to you.  Art is personal…and whether or not you created it…you selected it and therefore it is a representation of you in some way.  A very important tidbit to remember is that you change.  Your tastes, style, interests, activities, priorities in life all change…however, we often leave our selections of art untouched, unmoved and unchanged for years!  It is very important to truly be inspired by what surrounds you, so take the time and really evaluate what art you have and how it makes you feel.  It could be as simple as relocating the piece to a different area in your space.  Or, it could be that it is time for it to be “retired” temporarily or permanently.  No matter what, surround yourself with only the pieces that bring you joy.

Great information! Moving art around to "change things up" is a great idea!

Hi Dana, Good advice to let go of the unhealthy plants I'm hanging onto in our light-filled condo; the concept of recycling makes me feel better about not being able to resuscitate them.
